Exploring our range of Eco bags: what is jute?

Here at Paper Bag Co, we don’t just stock paper bags. We also stock a range of Eco bags from cotton bags to jute bags, but we often get asked: “what is jute?” So we thought it’s about time we gave some insight into what these highly durable bags are made of.

So what is jute?

Jute a natural fibre, mainly produced in the Ganges Delta, which is made from the outer stem and skin of a jute plant. Jute is an incredibly versatile material and common uses for the jute fibre is in the production of jute fabric and a number of other fabrics such as hessian and canvas. These fabrics can be found in all sorts of textiles from clothing and bags to upholstery and packaging.

Jute is one of the most commonly used fibres after cotton and it’s the versatility of these fibres that make them so popular with both consumers and businesses. Any bags made from plant fibres are also perfect for those living a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle, whilst also reducing the impact we are having on the planet thanks to their reusability.

Environmental benefits of jute:

  • Bio-degradable and compostable
  • Recyclable
  • Hard wearing and reusable
  • Easy to grow and matures quickly, meaning less space is needed for planting new crop

Both types of material can be transformed into stunning bags, but jute is the stronger of the two materials and has a more coarse feel and appearance. Compared to the softer cotton bags, jute bags tend to have a more solid structure which can appeal to some buyers more.
