Steps to cut paper's cost and carbon
Carbon footprinting is one of the hot topics of sustainability and in the print sector, paper is the centre of attention. This is because it's the single biggest source of carbon emissions in the print process.
Unfortunately for the paper industry, paper is key to a printed product's carbon footprint, contributing 50-70%. It is therefore, our primary focus in reducing carbon footprint.

Purchasing paper is a serious business...
Whoever said variety was the spice of life did not purchase paper for a living. Buying paper is complicated matter, no longer just about looking at value for money and high-quality products, the selection of the right grade now needs considerable thought. Over the past 10 years, there have been many developments in paper quality, for example in brightness and more opaqueness at lighter weights, but there remain many questions concerning quality, coated or uncoated, the shade and weight.
With the environment at the forefront of people's minds, developments in recycled papers have also been made. Purchasing paper is a serious business and tends to be largest single part of a publication's production costs, representing around 50%of the total value of the job.
Paper Bag Co sales' team is highly trained to guide you through our products and printing possibility. We also produce in the Uk, Europe and Far East to respond more efficiently to our customers, because each client has different requirements.

The New EcoPaper
Further to our article of the 11-Jun-08 "Paper made from hemp? really?", well now you can buy paper made from animal dung.
Paper as we know it today, comes from China and was invented by T'Sai Ko-Shi (Han Emporor Ho-Ti's). Paper comes from the process of macerating the fibre of plants until each filament is completely separate.
But now, The Exotic Paper Co produces paper from elephant or rhino dung! The Exotic Paper Co was established in 2001 and approved by the National Association of Paper Merchants (NAPM).
Since then, others companies develop the same idea using sheep or reindeer "poo". (www.sheeppoopaper.com)

The Bosses of the UK's biggest supermarket chains against the Environment Secretary
The Bosses of the UK's biggest supermarket chains attend on the 26-Jun-2008 a meeting with Environment Secretary Hilary Been, about how to reduce the number of carrier bags they give out.
Tesco, Marks & Spencer, Asda, Sainsbury's were all present, along with Morrisons, Somerfield and the Co-op.
The retailers had already signed up to a voluntary agreement to cut bag use, however the chief executive of one of the big supermarkets said the meeting was a "very heated debate".
Please act against them and take your re-usable bags when shopping to protect our planet.
Please read our article "Why switching to Paper Bags?" (many more other articles are also explaining the damages caused by plastic bags on our Blog News).

UK Paper Industry beats government recycling targets 2/2
The actual recycling rate of UK paper packaging waste is likely to be significantly higher than that declared within the packaging waste regulatory framework, leading to even greater carbon savings then is known to DEFRA.
Global demand remains high, but it is imperative that the UK recovery industry continues to produce a high-quality product in order to remain competitive both at home and abroad.
According to the Confederation of Paper Industries (CPI), more than 50% of recovered paper collected is currently sold and shipped abroad.

UK Paper Industry beats government recycling targets 1/2
The Paper Industry has already exceeded UK government targets for paper recycling.
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has increased its targets for packaging waste recovery for all materials - including paper, glass, aluminium and plastic - to 72% for 2008, 73% for 2009 and 74% for 2010.
Waste Minister Joan Ruddock said : "These increased targets represent our commitment to drive up recycling in Great Britain and tackle dangerous climate change".

What are retailers doing?
Lidl, being a European company is more environmentally than any UK companies. Lidl do not give any plastic carrier bags to its customers.
Waitrose was the first supermarket to introduce reusable bags, which it sells for 10p, but still hands out 250 million free disposable bags a year to its customers.
Marks & Spencer announced its 5p charge plans for England last year.
Since February 2007, Sainsbury's free bags have been made from 33% recycled plastic.
Tesco, the UK's largest supermarket, allocates reward points to shoppers who re-use bags.
Asda and Morrisons, instructed its cash register operators to offer fewer plastic bags to customers.
Back to November 2007, The Prime Minister Gordon Brown, announced that he would like to "eliminate" single-use plastic bags from Britain. Then in February 2008, he warned retailers he will force them to cut down on plastic bag use if they do not act voluntarily. Today August 2008, most of the UK supermarkets have not eliminated plastic carrier bags and continue to distribute them , free of charge, in large quantities.

What are we doing about the problem of plastic bags in the UK?
The government has so far resisted a national ban or a levy, preferring a voluntary agreement with the supermarkets to reduce "the overall environmental impact" of carrier bags by 25% by the end of 2008.
London is attempting to ban the millions of disposable shopping bags given by shops each year.
More than 90% of organisations said they wanted a complete, or would support a levy on every bags.
What can you do? Refuse plastic bags in shops and use instead re-usable bags or recycled / recyclable bags.
Please visit our website or contact us for more information.

The finishing touch
As most women know, there's nothing like a well-chosen accessory or two to bring an otherwise perfectly presentable.
So, if it's differentiation you're after - and is there a print buyer who isn't - think of your print job as a dress, and the addition of foil blocking, embossing, UV varnish or any expanding palette of special effects as the way to really get it noticed.
Does that sounds expensive? Think again. Paper Bag Co offers very competitive prices and our sales team is highly trained to guide you through our products and printing solutions. Whether it is a new image you want or just to promote your existing one we offer a personal service to suit your requirements. We can work with your internal marketing department or external design agency to design a bag that will reflect your brand. We can also supply a 3D visual of your design prior to production.
Please contact us to discuss the options available for materials, printing and finishes.

The loss of print's colourful vocabulary
Printing trade language has traditionally been robust. Compositors were called "gallery slaves" redolent of the type size approximating to 12-point and the act of lifting metal types from cases. Pressmen were less subtly derided as "horses" or "pigs" and "devil" was applied to craft apprentices.
Other quaint workshop language included "Winkle-bag printer" was an insult refferring to a company producing poor quality work.

New figures for Plastic Bags
Between 500 billion and 1 trillion Plastic grocery bags are consumed worldwide every year and every year each person on the planet will consume 300 of them.
Around the world, over 200,000 plastic bags are dumped in landfills every hour, where they get into the food chain through animals that ingest small particles of plastic or where they blow away to the oceans and kill aquatic lifes.
Plastic bags stay in the environment for between 500 and 1000 years unlike Paper bags which take about a month to decompose.
Please switch to paper bags and save the environment.

Oil Prices were set to soar in the coming year
The news arrived at the end of 2006 : oil prices were set to soar in the coming year and 18 months later, some printers may have wished they had paid more attention. The raw materials that make up consumables are all dependent on oil.
Printers in the UK can't afford to spend more money on shipment's costs - there simply isn't the profit margin in the industry to allow for that. That is why Paper Bag Co produces in UK, Europe and Far East to respond more efficiently to our clients.
With more and more pressure to save the Planet's resources, Paper Bag Co offer a full range of recycled bags, recyclable bags and re-usable bags.

Bright ideas for working smart
Printers in the UK are facing tough times.
With advertising one of the first budgets to be cut in the event of a downturn, print is one of the first sectors to feel the pinch. There have already been a number of high-profile closures this year and unfortunately, the number of administrations and job losses is growing.
However effective cost cutting does not have to be about making redundancies or operating at lower capacity.
Here some tips for cost savings: Making many small efficiencies will contribute to a big overall cost saving, share the plan; make everyone know what they must do and train your staff; they will become more efficient.
Paper Bag Co sales' team is highly trained to guide you through our products and printing possibility. We also produce in the Uk, Europe and Far East to respond more efficiently to our customers, because each client has different requirements.

Paper Bag Co offer a full range of recycled and recyclable paper bags
Why recycling matters?
Recycling conserves resources: Recycling helps conserve important raw materials and protects natural habitats for the future.
Recycling saves energy: Using recycled materials in the manufacturing process uses considerably less energy than that required for producing new products from raw materials.
Recycling helps protect the environment: Recycling reduces the need for extracting, refining and processing raw materials all of which create substantial air and water pollution.
Recycling reduces landfill: When we recycle, recyclable materials are reprocessed into new products, and as a result the amount of rubbish sent to landfill sites reduces.
Current UK recycling is estimated to save more than 18 million tonnes of CO2 a year - the equivalent to taking 5 million card off the road.
With more and more pressure to produce environmentally friendly, Paper Bag Co offer a full range of recycled bags, recyclable bags and re-usable bags.

The Green Switch
Businesses are being encouraged by the government to invest in green energy, which is hardly surprising considering the UK is aiming for a 10% reduction in it's cardon emissions by 2012. Looking further into the future, the government wants this reduced by 60% by 2050. With global warming at the forefront of everyone's mind, all businesses now need to be 20-28% more efficient than they were in 2002.
With more print buyers under pressure to purchase environmentally friendly, Paper Bag Co offer a full range of recycled bags, recyclable bags and re-usable bags.
All our bags are custom made and available in a large range of sizes and materials to made your bag to your own specification.

Who banned plastic bags?
According to David Barnes (Marine Scientist) plastic bags have gone from being rare in the late 80s and early 90s to being almost everywhere.
In 1995, the French Supermarkets E.LECLERC stopped distributing free plastic bags. India Mumbai banned plastic bags in 2000, followed by the Bangladesh, Himalayan State, Taiwan, China etc. In the other hand Britain is using more plastic bags than any other nation in Europe.
Katherine Mieszkowski, journalist said: " The problem with plastic bags isn't where they end up, its that they never seem to end".
Please switch to paper bags which take about a month to decompose.

Keep control of the colour of money
They say you only appreciate some things when they are gone, and this certainly applies to ink. The ubiquitous pigment makes the difference between a blank sheet of paper and a valued printed product : paper bag.
We, Paper Bag Co, produce beautiful, smart looking, trendy, fashionable and most important re-usable bags which mean that your bag becomes a walking advert, being seen over and over again.
Ink will account for around 3-6% of a job's total cost. That may be small compared with the paper spend, which can account for more than half the total cost. However our sales team will guide you through the printing possibility and your requirements to deliver the bag that suit you.

EU to clamp down on industrial emissions
The European Comission (EC) has adopted green legislation that could impact upon the paper industry.
The EC said that some EU members had not made enough progress with issuing permits and had failed to apply the "best available techniques" in the past.
However, the UK responded well to the Integrated Pollution, Prevention & Control (IPPC) directive, having issued 95% of permits by the end of October 2007, according to the Environment Agency. For the Paper Industry, this resulted in a 9% reduction in waste and a 75% reduction in the use of tributyltin, used to prevent fungal growth.

Plastic Bags and People's Health
Plastic bags are known to cause health's damage.
Wangari Maathai, Kenya's Noble Laureate, recently discovered that plastic bags litter create breeding areas of malaria-carrying mosquitoes. The Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki told UN Environment Programme (UNep) that his government would tackle the problem.
However Ms Maathai said "If I had my way, we would have started that immediately". She also is credited with planting more than 30 million trees around Africa, has urged other nations to join her tree-planting campaign.

Paper made from hemp? Really?
Back in 2002, the actor Woody Harrelson promoted the many uses of the plant including food, clothes and paper. The plant has long fibres and even when cut up it is much stronger.
Hemp activists claim that between 75% and 90% of paper was made from the plant during the Industrial Revolution (late 18th & early 19th Centuries). They also claim that 1 acre of "cannabis hemp" would produce as much pulp for paper as 4.1 acres of trees over a 20-year period. Hemp activists add that if the same process was applied today it would soon replace about 70% of all wood paper, including computer printout paper, corrugated boxes and paper bags.
However there was more money to be made by using the world's abundant forests in paper production and hemp fell by wayside.
Nevertheless currently 0.05% of the world's paper is made from hemp. Hemp was popular fibre because it grows quickly. It also produces 250% more fibre than cotton.

Bag Association Slams Government Plans for Paper Bag Charges
The UK Bag Manufacturers Association (UKBMA) has criticized government proposals to introduce charges on paper bags as well as plastic bags.
The government announced in the budget, on the 12 March, that it would introduce legislation to impose a minimum charge on single-use carrier bags if retailers did not do enough voluntarily - a levy would apply to both paper and plastic bags.
However, remember, nearly all paper bags used in the UK are also manufactured here, unlike plastic bags, which are imported.

Chinese plastic bag ban starts
The Chinese ban on single-use plastic carrier bags announced in January 2008, which will cut plastic bag usage by 60%, came into force on Sunday 1st June.
Dong Jinshi, vice chairman of the China Plastics Proscessing Industry Association's (CPPIA) said "The ban was aimed at changing people's habits". The CPPIA estimates China uses three billion bags every day.
China's largest plastic bag manufacturer, Huaquiang, closed as a direct result of the ban. The firm produced 250,000 tonnes of bags a year and was worth £150m, shut its doors on 18 January, ten days after the ban was announced.

The Short Route to Eco Paper
Regarding environmental degradation, the 20th Century has been the worst in history. Conscious of this situation, the paper industry is having to change how it produces products.
The paper industry represents 2% of the world commerce and the demand increses every day, therefore it needs customers to help if a real impact is to be made. If we all collaborate, we will allow our children and grand-children the chance of a good quality life, with satisfaction no lesser that we have had.

Recovered Paper
For a number of years, UK has led the debate on the need to build a quality management philosophy into its collection and sorting practices for recovered paper, in order to ensure long term sustainable recycling markets.
The result of these developments is that the UK has become a significant exporter of recovered paper (over 50% of what was collected in 2007) and to date this had been a successul area as there has been a huge increase in demand from the Far East, particularly China.

UK Paper Packaging Recycling
UK paper packaging recovery levels smash tragets!
Data released from the National Packaging Waste Database (NPWD) shows that the UK paper packaging recycling industry has smashed its targets within the packaging waste regulations.

Paper Recycling
According to Wasteconnect.co.uk, paper can be recycled 4 to 6 times.
Plastic bags can only be recycled into other plastic bags, however this is rarely the case . Also not all plastic bags can be recycled and many stores that collect them, simply send them to the landfill for lack of another alternative. Please note that modern landfills are designed so that nothing in them breakdowns - mean preserving the poison forever.

Why switching to Paper Bags?
Well facts are that Plastic bags are killing marine mammals and seabirds, floating in each square mile of our oceans, clogging roadside drains (which could cause the flooding of the street at heavy rainfalls) and causing damage to people's health.
Therefore Paper Bag Co supplies quality retail and promotional bags. We produce beautiful, smart looking, trendy, fashionable and most important re-usable bags. Research has shown that customers are much more likely to re-use high quality bags than plastic carrier bags. Consequently a high re-use rate means that you bag becomes a walking advert, being seen over and over again. Furthermore the environment benefits too.

A Bit of History...
The first recorded historical reference to grocery paper bags was made in 1630.
The use of sacks only really started to take off during the Industrial Revolution; between 1700 and 1800.
Then was created in 1957, the first plastic bags. Plastic bags appear in retail in 1974. Today governments are banning plastic bags to try to save the environment : they represent a hazard to wildlife, they can as well cause damage to people and they pollute both soil and air. Did You Know? The Plastic Bag Definition...
Plastic is a petroleum product - it comes from oil.
Plastic bags is a by-product of oil and polyethylene in other words plastic bags are made of petrochemicals: a non-renewable resource.
For the most part, the whole process of making plastic bags requires only electricity. 50% of that electricity is generated from the burning of old tires and 50% by nuclear fission: a radioactive waste.
Plastic bags don't biodegrade, they photo-degrade, breaking down into smaller and smaller toxic pieces which can contaminate soil and waterways. They stay in the environment for hundreds of years.
Therefore Paper Bag Co offer a full range of the highest quality recycled bags, recyclable bags and re-usable bags.
